Introducing Associate Professor Katherine A. Kim
Prof. Katherine A. Kim is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at National Taiwan University. Her academic journey began at Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering, Needham, MA, USA, where she developed a passion for using engineering to make a positive impact on society. Although she initially had no exposure to power electronics, her early career in industry introduced her to the field, sparking a deep interest that led her to pursue her Master’s and Ph.D. degrees at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, IL, USA. Her enthusiasm for renewable energy coupled with a lifelong interest in environmental protection, naturally drew her to specialize in solar power, recognizing its potential for clean energy.
Dr. Kim’s research is focused on power electronics, particularly in the domain of photovoltaic systems. Her fascination with switched-mode power supplies and her conviction in the critical role of solar power have driven her to become a leader in this field. Today, her research in photovoltaic (PV) differential power processing (DPP) converters and their control strategies is at the forefront of the field, demonstrating the impact of solar technology in meeting global energy needs.
Her international journey started as an Assistant Professor at the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology in South Korea, where she was able to immerse herself in a culture she had admired for many years. This opportunity allowed her to bridge her technical expertise with a personal interest in Korean language and culture. Since moving to Taiwan in 2019, she has continued to broaden her international experience while contributing significantly to the global research community.
Dr. Kim’s passion for education is evident in her innovative teaching methods and extensive online outreach. Her educational YouTube channel, “katkimshow,” has brought power electronics to a global audience, providing valuable resources for students and professionals alike. Through her dedication to research, teaching, and international collaboration, Dr. Kim is committed to making a lasting impact on society through enabling the wider use of sustainable energy to power our daily lives.
